The Election Commission has announced that 8,352 candidates will compete in the upcoming general election.
According to Commissioner General of Elections, Saman Sri Ratnayake, the Colombo District has the highest number of candidates, with 966 individuals vying for seats.
A total of 50 groups have fielded candidates in Colombo, with nominations from 46 groups accepted. This includes 27 recognized political parties and 19 independent groups.
In contrast, the Polonnaruwa District has the fewest candidates, with only 120, comprising 13 recognized political parties and 2 independent groups.
