Consumer Affairs Authority Rakes in Rs. 400,000 in Recent Raids; Total Fines Exceed Rs. 200 million in 2023

In a recent crackdown, the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has reported a successful collection of Rs. 400,000 in fines during raids conducted in the Polonnaruwa and Nuwara Eliya districts on November 15. This marks a significant contribution to the overall fines amassed by the CAA throughout the year.

The CAA revealed that a staggering sum of over Rs. 200 million has been collected in fines from various raids conducted across Sri Lanka in 2023. Specifically, from January to October this year, a total of Rs. 220 million has been accumulated through fines, showcasing the authority’s commitment to enforcing consumer protection regulations.

During these ten months, the CAA conducted an impressive 22,000 raids, targeting various establishments. Legal actions have been initiated against approximately 19,000 individuals, reflecting the authority’s stringent approach towards those violating consumer rights.

The fines imposed during these operations were primarily for offenses such as hoarding stocks, selling goods above the Maximum Retail Price, dealing in expired goods, and failing to display the prices of products. The CAA’s comprehensive efforts aim to ensure fair trade practices, protect consumers, and maintain market transparency.

As the CAA continues its rigorous enforcement actions, the fines collected serve as a deterrent against malpractices, contributing to a more transparent and consumer-friendly marketplace.
