Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa Unveils Shocking Allegations: SLC President Accuses Sports Ministry of ICC Ban

In a startling revelation today, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa disclosed that Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) President Shammi Silva had submitted a letter to the International Cricket Council (ICC) outlining claims of undue interference by the Sports Ministry. According to Premadasa, these alleged interferences served as the catalyst for the ICC’s decision to impose a ban on Sri Lanka Cricket.

Premadasa informed the Parliament that the communication, dated August 28, 2023, contained five serious allegations along with an additional point. He proceeded to table the letter before the Parliament, emphasizing the gravity of the accusations.

The letter accused the Sports Ministry of various transgressions, including claims that the Director of Sports exerted undue influence on cricket tournaments within the country. It further alleged that the Sports Ministry Secretary sought salaries for the office bearers of the SLC and that the Sports Minister influenced the SLC to obtain permission for the LPL tournament. Additionally, the letter claimed that the Sports Minister played a role in shaping the SLC Constitution and leaked the draft audit report.

Premadasa highlighted an additional point in the letter, asserting that the Sports Minister influenced the SLC to contribute 20 percent of its funds to the National Sports Fund.

The Opposition Leader contended that these allegations, presented on August 28, 2023, contributed to the ICC’s decision to ban Sri Lanka Cricket. He characterized this revelation as a betrayal of Sri Lanka Cricket by its president and called for decisive action against the implicated parties.

Chief Government Whip Prasanna Ranatunga acknowledged the seriousness of the matter, especially considering the Opposition Leader’s presentation of written evidence. He urged the Speaker to appoint a Parliamentary Select Committee to thoroughly investigate the allegations.
