Indian High Commission Signs Agreements for Construction of 10,000 Houses in Sri Lanka’s Plantation Areas

The High Commission of India has formally executed two significant agreements for the construction of 10,000 houses in the plantation areas of Sri Lanka, marking a crucial milestone in Phase IV of the Indian Housing Project.

In an official statement, the Indian High Commission highlighted that Phase-IV of the Indian Housing Project spans across 11 Districts and 6 provinces of Sri Lanka. The Government of India’s steadfast commitment to this project currently stands at an impressive 60,000 houses.

The initial two phases saw the completion of 46,000 houses in the Northern and Eastern Provinces, while the third phase, focusing on the construction of 4,000 houses in plantation areas, is on the verge of completion.

The statement further emphasized that housing holds a central position in India’s people-centric development cooperation partnership with Sri Lanka. Beyond the Indian Housing Project, an additional 2,400 houses are under construction across the 25 Districts of Sri Lanka as part of various housing projects.

The High Commission disclosed that India’s development cooperation portfolio in Sri Lanka amounts to around USD 5 billion, with nearly USD 600 million allocated in grants, underscoring the robust and enduring collaboration between the two nations.
