Singapore Court Permits Sri Lankan Government’s Case Against X-Press Pearl Owners to Proceed

The Singapore court has granted permission for the Sri Lankan government’s case against the owners of the X-Press Pearl vessel to advance. The case is slated to be heard before the Singapore International Commercial Court on January 29.

The Attorney General’s Department has emphasized the necessity of filing a comprehensive complaint on behalf of the Sri Lankan government before the scheduled hearing. Current efforts are underway to compile the detailed complaint.

The court granted the requisite permission after the shipping company lodged preliminary objections in response to the case. The legal action has been initiated to seek compensation for the environmental damage inflicted upon the marine ecosystem of Sri Lanka following the X-Press Pearl fire and subsequent sinking of the ship.
