In a significant milestone, Sri Lanka introduced its inaugural digitized national birth certificate featuring a barcode as part of the groundbreaking E-Population Program. The launch event, held at the Kalutara District Secretariat, was under the esteemed patronage of State Minister of Home Affairs, Ashoka Priyantha.
During the event, the state minister emphasized that the innovative initiative, initially implemented in Kalutara, is anticipated to extend to other districts in the near future.
The E-Population Program adheres to international standards, with the unique identifier in the National Birth Certificate expected to be transformed into National Identity Card (NIC) numbers at a later stage.
This pioneering initiative is designed to issue a distinctive Personal Identification Number (PIN) at birth for all citizens, contributing to a comprehensive repository of fundamental information for every Sri Lankan citizen. The overarching goal is to establish an efficient and reliable life events registration system, fostering enhanced information sharing with government institutions through the population register.
The program aims to provide broader analytical capabilities concerning demographics and health statistics, while simultaneously expanding the coverage of recording life events. As the E-Population Program unfolds, it is poised to become a pivotal tool in streamlining administrative processes and promoting a more connected and informed governance system in Sri Lanka.
