Acting IGP Deshabandu Thennakoon Announces Immediate Transfers and Appointments

In a significant development, Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Thennakoon has initiated a comprehensive reshuffling of key positions within the police force. A total of 19 officers have been affected, including a Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG), seven Deputy Inspector Generals (DIGs), nine Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs), and two Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs).

This series of transfers and appointments, effective immediately, received the formal approval of the National Police Commission, underscoring the procedural adherence to the restructuring. This marks the first round of changes orchestrated by Thennakoon since assuming office as the Acting IGP.

The notable changes include the transfer of Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police U.P.A.D.K.P. Karunanayake to the position of Senior DIG in charge of the Uva Province from Ratnapura District. Concurrently, Female Senior Superintendent of Police R.A.D. Ms. Kumari has been appointed as the Director of the Computer Crime Investigation Division, relocating from Police Headquarters.

The DIGs affected by the reshuffle are as follows:

  • D.P. Chandrasiri moves from DIG in charge of Field Force Headquarters to DIG in charge of Galle District.
  • G.I.D.R. Wijesinghe transitions from Galle District to DIG in charge of Field Force Headquarters.
  • D.V.P. Ajith Hesiri moves from DIG in charge of the Recruitment and Training Division to DIG in charge of the Special Security Division.
  • A.S.P.C. Wedamulla moves from DIG in charge of Shipping and Tourism Division to DIG in charge of Kurunegala District.

Acting DIG H. Samudrajeewa and Acting DIG H.C.A. Pushpakumara have been transferred to the positions of DIG in charge of Shipping and Tourism Division and DIG in charge of the Recruitment and Training Division, respectively. Acting DIG W.S.P de Silva transitions from the Prime Minister’s Security Division to the DIG in charge of the Prime Minister’s Security Division.

Other notable appointments include Senior Superintendent of Police D.M.M.A.B. Mahagirilla as the Director of the Transport Division and SSP K.G.P.B. Samarapala as the Director of the Criminal Intelligence, Analysis, and Prevention Division.

These changes reflect a strategic realignment of leadership roles within the police force, enhancing efficiency and responsiveness to evolving challenges. The Acting IGP’s commitment to organizational excellence is evident in this bold and decisive move.
