Weather Update: Cloudy Skies and Showers Expected Across Sri Lanka

The Department of Meteorology has forecasted cloudy skies over most provinces of the island today, December 16.

Showers are anticipated at intervals in the Northern, North-central, Eastern, Southern, Central, and Uva provinces. In other areas of the island, showers or thundershowers are expected after 1:00 p.m. Several rounds of showers are also forecasted in the North-Western Province during the morning.

Some areas, particularly in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, North-western, and Eastern provinces, may experience heavy showers of about 100 mm.

The public is advised to take necessary precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Sea Areas:

Showers or thundershowers are expected at times in the sea areas off the coast from Colombo to Mullaitivu via Galle, Hambantota, Batticaloa, and Trincomalee. Additionally, showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in other sea areas around the island.

Wind conditions will be North-easterly with speeds ranging from 25-35 kmph. In the sea areas off the coast from Colombo to Trincomalee via Mannar and Kankesanturai, wind speeds may increase up to 40-50 kmph.

The sea areas from Colombo to Trincomalee via Mannar and Kankesanturai may be rough at times, while the other sea areas around the island will be fairly rough. The sea areas off the coast from Colombo to Trincomalee via Galle and Hambantota may experience rough conditions with temporarily strong gusty winds reaching up to 60-70 kmph during thundershowers.
