An explosion occurred near the Israeli Embassy in New Delhi on Tuesday, but fortunately, no staff members were killed or wounded, according to authorities. The cause of the explosion is under investigation, and officials are actively examining the area. Despite ongoing investigations, the site has been reopened to the general public, and there is no indication that any passersby were harmed.
Israel has issued a cautionary advisory to its citizens in India, particularly in New Delhi, urging them to exercise caution. The country’s National Security Council, in a statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office, suggested that the blast “may have been an attack.” Israeli missions globally have been on heightened alert due to an increase in antisemitic attacks, coinciding with Israel’s counteroffensive against Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip.
Israeli Embassy spokesperson Guy Nir confirmed the incident, stating, “We can confirm that around 5:20 pm there was a blast at close proximity to the embassy.” Local police and security teams are actively investigating the matter.
As of three hours after the blast, the search operation had not yielded any findings, according to an official involved in the investigation. It is worth noting that in January 2021, a small bomb exploded near the Israeli embassy in New Delhi, causing no harm. At that time, Israeli officials treated the incident as a terrorist attack.
