Sri Lanka’s Telecommunications Regulatory Commission Issues Public Notice on Mobile Phone Purchases

The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) has released a special notice directed at individuals intending to purchase mobile phones. Menaka Pathirana, Deputy Director of Compliance (Consumer Complaints & Consumer/Public Awareness) at TRCSL, has urged the public to scrutinize the registration status of their mobile phones at the time of purchase.

Pathirana advised consumers to confirm the registration of their mobile phones with TRCSL by sending an SMS to 1909, typing IMEI <Space> followed by the 15-digit IMEI number of the new phone. She emphasized that an immediate response SMS would be dispatched, confirming whether the mobile phone is authorized by TRCSL or not.

Highlighting the importance of new mobile phones being authorized by TRCSL, Pathirane emphasized that the verification process is crucial to preempt potential issues that consumers might encounter in the future. This proactive measure aims to ensure the authenticity and compliance of mobile phones with TRCSL standards, enhancing consumer confidence and avoiding potential complications.
