Hambantota International Port (HIP) Reports Phenomenal Growth in Oil and Gas Vessel Calls in 2023

In an extraordinary year for the Hambantota International Port (HIP), 2023 saw a staggering 132% increase in oil and gas vessel calls compared to the preceding year. The port’s strategic bunkering partnership with Sinopec played a pivotal role in driving this remarkable growth, contributing substantial value to HIP’s commercial operations, according to HIPG.

Throughout the year 2023, HIP handled a total oil and gas throughput of 918,000 metric tons, including 700,000 metric tons of bunker and 218,000 metric tons of LPG cargoes. July 2023 emerged as the pinnacle month, witnessing a record-breaking 35 vessel calls, reflecting the highest number throughout the year.

HIP experienced an impressive growth trajectory across various metrics, with a notable 186% increase in LPG vessels and a 125% surge in bunker vessels compared to the previous year. Overall throughput at the port achieved a remarkable 218% growth, with LPG and bunker categories witnessing increases of 147% and 250%, respectively, compared to 2022.

Tissa Wickremasinghe, COO of Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG), expressed optimism about the energy sector as a growth market for HIP and anticipates a further doubling of these figures in the current year. The collaboration with Sinopec is identified as a transformative force in reshaping bunker supplies in the Indian Ocean while adhering to the highest standards of health and safety.

Trilan Perera, Executive Director of Ship Agency & Marine Services at Lanka Shipping & Logistics (PVT) Ltd, praised HIP’s dynamic team for ensuring seamless collaboration with industry professionals, delivering exemplary services, and maintaining bunkering facilities that prioritize safety, reliability, and operational efficiency.

Despite facing challenges such as an economic downturn and a dollar crisis in Sri Lanka, as well as global geopolitical events impacting oil markets, HIP achieved its target volumes. Wickremasinghe highlighted the port’s ability to manage vessel operations, handle manpower efficiently, and maintain a completely accident-free environment.

Looking ahead to 2024, HIP sets ambitious goals, emphasizing the commitment not only to overcoming challenges but also to setting new standards and achieving comprehensive growth in the maritime landscape.
