Sri Lanka to Host ICC’s Annual General Meeting in July 2024

Minister of Sports Harin Fernando has announced that Sri Lanka will host the Annual General Meeting of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in July 2024. The prestigious event is scheduled to take place from 19 to 22 July 2024 in Colombo, as conveyed by the minister.

Minister Fernando took to social media, specifically X (formerly Twitter), to share this significant development. He expressed optimism about the positive impact this hosting opportunity will have on Sri Lanka, both in the realm of cricket and as a boost to the tourism sector.

The announcement follows a suspension of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) membership by the ICC on 10 November, citing serious breaches of obligations, particularly in managing its affairs autonomously and preventing government interference in cricket governance. However, after a meeting of the ICC Board on 21 November, it was decided that Sri Lanka could continue to participate in international cricket despite the suspension.

In a notable update on January 28, the ICC confirmed the immediate lifting of the suspension imposed against SLC. The ICC Board, after monitoring the situation since the suspension, expressed satisfaction that SLC is no longer in breach of its membership obligations. The statement from the ICC read, “The ICC Board has been monitoring the situation since the suspension and is now satisfied that SLC are no longer in breach of membership obligations.”
