Amul Delegation Concludes Inspection of NLDB Farms in Sri Lanka as Collaboration Sparks Local Concerns

A delegation from India’s Amul Company has successfully completed its inspection of 31 farms owned by the National Livestock Development Board (NLDB) in Sri Lanka. This visit follows a bilateral agreement between the two nations to collaborate on enhancing Sri Lanka’s liquid milk industry, with discussions potentially involving the leasing of NLDB farms to Amul.

During the inspection process, the Amul team diligently gathered information related to land use, annual production, animal numbers, and the status of underutilized land across the NLDB farms. This comprehensive data collection is intended to serve as the foundation for developing a new plan for the farm development under the NLDB.

However, the proposed lease agreement has triggered objections from local dairy farmers. Over the past few months, several protests have been organized, expressing concerns about potential impacts on their livelihoods and the broader dairy industry. The situation underscores the challenges and reservations among the local community regarding the collaboration between Amul and NLDB.
