Surging Egg Prices Despite Abundant Supply, Says AIPA President

Ajith Gunasekara, President of the All Island Poultry Association (AIPA), revealed that despite an abundance of eggs and chicken in the country, prices have surged due to inadequate supply meeting the demand.

Initially, the market had ample eggs available, with prices standing at Rs. 35 per egg by April 5th. However, as demand surged around April 10th due to the Muslim festival (Eid al-Fitr) and Sinhala and Tamil New Year, producers struggled to meet the increased requirements.

Gunasekara noted that while the price of an egg was initially between Rs. 40 and Rs. 45, it has now soared to between Rs. 50 and Rs. 60 per egg.
