Presidential Commission Engages with International Election Organizations on Electoral System Amendments

The Presidential Commission, tasked with recommending amendments to the electoral system, has initiated discussions with several international election organizations. According to its Secretary, Madhawa Devasurendra, a delegation, including the head of the European Union’s Election Observation Mission, recently met with the commission.

During these discussions, opinions and suggestions were gathered on electoral systems and election conduct in Europe. Additionally, the commission consulted with officials from the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, a Swedish-based international election monitoring organization.

Currently, the commission is compiling its final report, which will incorporate relevant comments and suggestions gathered from these consultations.

In response to the progress made, the President has approved an extension of the commission’s tenure by two weeks, beyond its original end date of June 15.
