Meteorology Department Issues ‘Amber’ Advisory for Strong Winds and Rough Seas

The Department of Meteorology has issued an ‘Amber’ advisory for strong winds and rough seas for the coastal areas extending from Mannar to Chilaw via Puttalam, and from Hambantota to Pottuvil. This advisory is in effect until 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, 23 June.

The Met Department warned that these sea areas will experience very rough conditions at times, with gusty winds reaching speeds of 60-65 kmph. Additionally, the coastal areas from Chilaw to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle, and from Trincomalee to Mannar via Mullaitivu and Kankasanthurai, will be rough at times with gusty winds of 50-55 kmph.

Wave heights in the sea areas from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota may increase to about 2.0–2.5 meters.

Naval and fishing communities are advised to exercise caution in these conditions.
