Japan and Sri Lanka Pledge Enhanced Cooperation Toward Nuclear Disarmament

Japan’s Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa, in a Tokyo meeting with Sri Lankan counterpart Ali Sabry, emphasizes Japan’s commitment to collaborating closely with Sri Lanka to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons. Discussions also covered regional dynamics across East Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, and Ukraine, underscoring the need for continued dialogue. Minister Kamikawa urged expedited domestic processes in Sri Lanka to finalize and ratify the Additional Protocol (AP). Minister Sabry highlighted Sri Lanka’s efforts and challenges in advancing women’s social status, seeking deeper collaboration with Minister Kamikawa, a stalwart supporter of Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) initiatives. The ministers affirmed their intent to bolster UN capabilities, including advocating for Security Council reform, with Minister Sabry looking to Japan as a pivotal link between the Global South and North.
