Presidential Election Date Announcement Imminent, Says Sri Lanka’s Election Commission Chairman

The date for the upcoming Presidential Election will be announced before the end of this month, according to the Chairman of the Elections Commission of Sri Lanka, R.M.A.L. Rathnayake.

Speaking during a special press conference on Tuesday (16), he assured that nothing will affect the holding of the election on the announced date.

Mr. Rathnayake emphasized that the dates are determined in accordance with the Constitution and the President’s Act. He also stated that the acceptance of nominations for the presidential poll should occur between the 16th and 21st day after the publication of the notice of the poll.

Additionally, the chairman explained that the presidential election must be held within 4-6 weeks from the date of acceptance of nominations.
