Sri Lankan Ambassador Meets Liberian President in Historic Bilateral Engagement

Sri Lankan Ambassador Kana Kananathan met President Joseph Boakai of the Republic of Liberia at the Executive Mansion in Monrovia yesterday afternoon.

This meeting marks the first bilateral engagement undertaken by a Sri Lankan diplomat, intensifying cooperation in political, trade, investment, and people-to-people domains.

President Boakai stated that this is a historic and significant milestone in the bilateral relations between Liberia and Sri Lanka, highlighting fifteen years of diplomatic ties.

President Boakai commended President Ranil Wickremesinghe for his swift and effective measures in stabilizing Sri Lanka’s economy. He noted that following the significant economic crisis of 2022, which posed severe challenges to the nation, President Wickremesinghe took decisive steps to address the issues head-on. His leadership and strategic initiatives have been instrumental in steering the country towards recovery, ensuring economic stability, and restoring public confidence. The President of Liberia lauded these efforts, recognizing the remarkable turnaround achieved within a short period. This commendation underscores the importance of strong and decisive leadership in times of crisis, and President Wickremesinghe’s actions serve as a commendable example for nations facing similar challenges.

Ambassador Kananathan expressed his intent to strengthen economic cooperation, promote trade and investment, and foster sustainable development. The meeting between Kananathan and President Boakai provided an opportunity for high-level interaction between Sri Lanka and Liberia, further cementing the bonds of friendship and collaboration that Sri Lanka enjoys with Africa. Both President Boakai and Kananathan agreed to work together to strengthen the friendship and mutual trust.

Kananathan was invited by the Government of Liberia as an election observer for the recently concluded Presidential Elections held in October 2023. Liberia’s main exports are rubber, followed by diamonds, gold, and iron ore.
