Surge in Dengue Mosquito Larvae Density Prompts Special Surveys in High-Risk Zones

The Government Health Entomology Officers’ Association has reported a significant increase in dengue mosquito larvae density within government institutions and private factories.

Najith Sumanasena, President of the association, announced that special entomological surveys will be conducted in the identified high-risk zones.

Sumanasena highlighted that Sri Lanka has experienced a nationwide surge in dengue cases this year, with approximately 30,500 reported cases and around twelve fatalities to date.

Survey data indicates a notably higher density of mosquito larvae in government institutions and various private sector facilities, such as factories and businesses, compared to residential areas.

To address this issue, a special entomological survey program was carried out on July 22, 23, and 24. Sumanasena revealed that the survey identified public institutions and areas with the highest number of mosquito larvae. Eradication efforts will be implemented on Fridays and Saturdays to combat this issue.

“Steps will be taken to reduce the spread of mosquito larvae in public institutions and areas identified as having the highest density, specifically on Fridays and Saturdays,” Sumanasena said.

Additionally, approximately 60 officers have been deployed to these high-risk areas to assist in the eradication of mosquito larvae.
