Trade Minister Nalin Fernando Warns of Potential Egg Imports if Prices Remain High

Trade Minister Nalin Fernando has announced that it is feasible to lower the retail price of eggs to Rs. 40. He cautioned that if egg producers do not reduce prices for the festive season, the government may once again resort to importing eggs from India.

Fernando noted that egg prices have recently dropped by Rs. 6 and stated he will investigate this issue by obtaining reports from the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA). He voiced concerns that if eggs cannot be sold for at least Rs. 40, importing eggs from India might become necessary. He also highlighted that, with cake manufacturers expected to buy large quantities of eggs during the December festival season, it is crucial for prices to be adjusted accordingly.

The minister stressed that if egg prices are not reduced by then, the government will need to either import eggs or ensure consumer protection by providing eggs at the appropriate price.
