Publication of the Online Safety (Amendment) Bill in Government Gazette

The Online Safety Bill has been a topic of significant debate, with various stakeholders voicing concerns about potential restrictions on freedom of expression and other constitutional issues arising from its provisions. In response, the Cabinet of Ministers approved publishing a revised version of the Online Safety Bill in the government gazette, with plans to present it to Parliament on July 23.

Despite experts recommending amendments to certain sections before the bill’s passage, there was no opportunity to incorporate these suggestions during the committee stage. Consequently, on February 12, 2024, the Cabinet of Ministers approved a proposal to draft an amendment to the Security of Online Methods Act No. 9 of 2024 to address these concerns.

The Cabinet’s decision, presented by the Minister of Public Security, Tiran Alles, also included publishing the draft amendment in the government gazette and presenting it to Parliament for approval.
