Container Transport Owners Association Highlights Customs Delays Impacting Trade

The Container Transport Owners Association has expressed concerns over delays in customs clearance for imported containers, which they say are severely affecting trade operations.

Chairman Sanath Manjula attributed the problem to a shortage of container yards, resulting in a backlog of containers at the harbor. He also pointed out that the limited number of customs checkpoints in Colombo has led to congestion and inefficiencies in the clearance process.

The association has called for immediate action, including the establishment of additional container yards and the expansion of customs clearance facilities.

In response, Sri Lanka Customs Spokesperson Seevali Arukgoda acknowledged the industry’s challenges and stated that the issue has been brought to the attention of relevant authorities, including the Ministry of Finance.
