Sri Lanka Ministry of Public Security to Decide on Tourist Visa Issuance Amid Supreme Court Suspension

The Ministry of Public Security is set to make a crucial decision today regarding the issuance of visas to tourists arriving in Sri Lanka.

This development follows a recent interim order from the Supreme Court, which halted the implementation of a Cabinet decision that had granted e-Visa services to two foreign companies.

Ministry Secretary Viyani Gunathilaka confirmed that discussions are ongoing with officials from the Immigration & Emigration Department. The e-Visa system has been scrutinized due to allegations of procedural violations and misuse of public trust during the procurement process.

The Supreme Court’s suspension of the Cabinet decision aims to address these concerns and restore transparency. Consequently, the online visa issuance system has been temporarily suspended, effective from the night of August 2nd.

Until further notice, tourists arriving in Sri Lanka will be issued ON ARRIVAL visas at the airport.
