President Ranil Wickremesinghe has announced that vehicle imports will be gradually permitted starting next year.
The President stated that this decision is intended to boost government revenue through customs duties. He highlighted the necessity of increasing income to support the country’s foreign reserves, saying, “I believe our reserves have grown sufficiently to allow vehicle imports, as customs duties on vehicles are a significant revenue source for the government.”
