NPP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake Vows to Eliminate VAT on Essential Items in First Budget Under NPP Government

A future National People’s Power (NPP) government will eliminate the VAT on medicines, school supplies, and food items through its first budget, NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake announced today.

Speaking at the NPP’s inaugural rally in Tangalle, Dissanayake stated that a simplified tax system will be introduced, and measures will be taken to recover unpaid taxes from businesses, including liquor manufacturers.

“We will remove VAT on medicines and medical tests. The VAT on school supplies and supplementary reading books will also be eliminated, and steps will be taken to remove VAT on food items. This will be implemented in the first budget under an NPP government,” he said.

Dissanayake emphasized that the NPP will inherit a country in crisis, with failures across all sectors, and pledged that the NPP government will restore the nation with determination.

He assured that the NPP will not seek revenge but will take decisive action against those guilty of wrongdoing and responsible for fraud and corruption.

“We will put an end to fraud and corruption and recover stolen assets,” Dissanayake asserted.
