Postal Department to Receive Presidential Election Ballot Papers Tomorrow

The Postal Department will receive the reserved packet containing registered postal vote ballot papers for the 2024 presidential election tomorrow (26). The distribution of official polling cards for the upcoming Presidential Election will begin on September 3, with September 8 (Sunday) designated as a special day for polling card distribution.

Deputy Postmaster General Rajitha Ranasinghe announced this morning (25) that the leave of all Department of Posts employees has been canceled with immediate effect until the conclusion of the 2024 Presidential Election. This decision was made to ensure that all election-related responsibilities are adequately managed. However, any postal worker requiring leave for essential reasons must obtain permission from the Deputy Postmaster General in charge of their province.

The Presidential Election is scheduled for September 21, with postal voting to take place on September 4, 5, and 6. September 4 is reserved for District Secretariats, Election Offices, and Police for marking postal votes. Additional dates of September 11 and 12 have been allocated for those unable to mark their postal vote earlier.

Commissioner General of Elections Saman Sri Ratnayake stated that 736,589 applications were received for postal voting in the 2024 Presidential Election. Of these, 24,268 postal vote applications were rejected, leaving a total of 712,321 applicants eligible for postal voting.
