Showers and Strong Winds Expected in Several Provinces, Sun to be Directly Overhead in Sri Lanka

The Meteorology Department forecasts showers at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-western provinces, as well as in the Galle, Matara, Kandy, and Nuwara-Eliya districts.

Fairly heavy showers exceeding 50 mm are likely in some areas of the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, and in the Galle, Matara, Nuwara-Eliya, and Puttalam districts.

Showers or thundershowers may also occur at a few locations in the Uva province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts during the evening or night.

Strong winds of about 40-50 kmph are expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills, as well as in the Northern, North-central, and North-western provinces, and in the Hambantota and Trincomalee districts.

Additionally, the Department of Meteorology reports that the sun will be directly overhead in Sri Lanka between August 28 and September 6 due to its apparent southward relative motion. Today (30), the sun will be directly overhead at Vavuniya, Vannamoddai, Analkaddimady, and Periyapandirichchan at approximately 12:10 p.m.

The general public is advised to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers
