Presidential Election Campaigns to Conclude at Midnight

The election campaign activities for Sri Lanka’s 2024 Presidential Election will officially conclude at midnight today (18th). A mandatory silence period will commence, lasting until the election day on Saturday (21st).

During this period, any form of campaigning is strictly prohibited. Law enforcement authorities are empowered to arrest individuals or groups violating election rules and take legal action.

Chairman of the Election Commission of Sri Lanka, R.M.A.L. Ratnayake, has ordered that all election offices established by political parties must be dismantled by midnight on September 19th. After that time, only the election office for each division may remain operational.

“All 13,314 constituency-level offices currently established must be removed by midnight on the 19th. Only one new electoral office can be set up per constituency,” Ratnayake stated.

He urged all candidates to comply with this directive, warning that the police will take necessary action if the offices are not removed.

Additionally, Ratnayake reminded voters who have not yet received their official polling cards that they can still collect them from their local post office.
