President Anura Kumara Dissanayake Pledges to Strengthen Democracy in Inaugural Address (Video)

In his first address to the nation after being sworn in as President, Anura Kumara Dissanayake assured his unwavering commitment to upholding and strengthening the democracy that elected him to office.

Speaking to the nation, President Dissanayake emphasized, “The most significant aspect of our democracy is the public’s right to elect the country’s leader. However, democracy is not just about casting votes or electing a ruler. We acknowledge that our democratic structures need further strengthening, along with robust legislation. I assure the public that I will give my utmost commitment to safeguarding democracy during my tenure as President.”

Dissanayake also expressed his gratitude to outgoing President Ranil Wickremesinghe for graciously accepting the people’s mandate and facilitating a smooth transition of power, in respect of democratic principles. He noted that no leader in the country’s history had ever refused to honor the public’s decision regarding the transfer of power.

Further addressing the nation, the newly elected Executive President acknowledged the significant challenges ahead. “We understand that we are taking over a country in a difficult situation. The public expects us to create a positive political culture, and we are ready to work towards that. We will do everything in our power to restore the public’s confidence in politics and politicians.”

President Dissanayake also made it clear that navigating the current crisis would require collective efforts. “I do not believe that one person, one government, or one party alone can solve the deep crisis we are facing. I have said before that I am not a magician, but an ordinary citizen of this country. While I have certain abilities and knowledge, my priority is to harness more expertise and gather insights to guide the country with sound decisions. My responsibility is to be part of a collective triumph.”

The President expressed his intention to collaborate with international communities for the country’s benefit. “I expect the support of every citizen in overcoming this crisis, and I assure the public that I will fulfill my responsibilities with dedication. I understand the importance of international cooperation and intend to work with other nations in ways that benefit our country. We cannot isolate ourselves from the world but must move forward in unison with other nations. We will not hesitate to make the necessary decisions to achieve this.”

He also called for the support of the country’s industrialists and entrepreneurs in contributing to Sri Lanka’s recovery.

Concluding his address, President Dissanayake acknowledged the diverse composition of the electorate that brought him to power. “I was elected by the democracy of this country. Some people voted for me, while others did not. We fully understand the scope and nature of our victory. My responsibility is to build trust among those who did not vote for us, and I am confident that I will succeed in that mission,” he signed off.
