Sri Lanka Defeats New Zealand by 63 Runs in First Test to Take Series Lead

Sri Lanka secured a 63-run victory over New Zealand on Monday (September 23) in the first Test of the two-match series at Galle International Stadium. Setting a target of 275 runs, Sri Lanka bowled out New Zealand for 211 in their second innings to claim the win.

Rachin Ravindra, New Zealand’s No. 4 batter, top-scored with a resilient 92 off 168 balls but could not guide his team to victory as Tim Southee’s side fell short.

With this loss, New Zealand has dropped to 4th place in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 standings, holding a PCT of 42.86%. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka, after winning their second consecutive match, has climbed to 3rd place with a 50.00 PCT.

India leads the WTC points table with a 71.67 PCT, followed by Australia with 62.50%. India’s dominant victory over Bangladesh by 280 runs in the first Test of their series further solidified their top position.
