Lakshman Nipuna Arachchi Appointed to Parliament Following Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s Presidential Election

The Election Commission has officially gazetted the appointment of Lakshman Nipuna Arachchi to fill the parliamentary vacancy created by the election of Anura Kumara Dissanayake as the 9th Executive President of Sri Lanka.

Lakshman Nipuna Arachchi has been appointed as a Colombo District Member of Parliament (MP) representing the National People’s Power (NPP). He was next in line on the preference list from the 2020 General Elections, following Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

Earlier today (23), the Secretary General of Parliament, Mrs. Kushani Rohanadeera, notified the Chairman of the Election Commission in writing that Anura Kumara Dissanayake had officially resigned from his parliamentary seat, effective today, due to his assumption of duties as President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.

In her letter, the Secretary General confirmed that this notification was made in accordance with Section 64 (1) of the Parliamentary Elections Act No. 1 of 1981, as amended by the Elections (Special Provisions) Act No. 35 of 1988, and Article 66(c) of the Constitution, which outlines the procedures for addressing vacancies in the Ninth Parliament.
