U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, praised Sri Lankans for peacefully exercising their democratic rights in the 2024 presidential election. He acknowledged the country’s strong commitment to democracy, as millions participated in shaping their nation’s future.
Senator Cardin also emphasized the significant challenges facing Sri Lanka’s new administration, including the aftermath of the 2022 economic crisis and the need for progress in governance, anti-corruption, human rights, and accountability.
He reaffirmed the United States’ continued commitment to supporting Sri Lanka in achieving a just, democratic, and economically sustainable future.
