Sri Lanka’s Position at the 57th Session of the UN Human Rights Council

In light of the matters submitted by Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Vijitha Herath, concerning the 57th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), which is being held from September 9 to October 11, 2024, in Geneva, the Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval to present Sri Lanka’s position on certain issues.

Sri Lanka has firmly rejected the proposed draft resolution during the current session of the UNHRC and continues to oppose the 51/1 resolution concerning the external evidence collection mechanism. The government has not consented to any resolution that expands the powers of this mechanism.

Additionally, while rejecting the aforementioned proposal, the Cabinet of Ministers reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s commitment to addressing key human rights issues, including reconciliation through local procedures.

The Cabinet also agreed that Sri Lanka will persist in engaging in cooperative and meaningful discussions with the Human Rights Council and related human rights mechanisms moving forward.
