The Ministry of Public Security has directed the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) to expedite investigations into seven high-profile cases, including the Easter Sunday bombings and the controversial 2015 Treasury Bond auction.
According to the Police Spokesman, the ministry also instructed faster progress on investigations into the death of businessman Dinesh Schaffter and the killing of a police officer during a shooting incident near the “W15” Hotel in Weligama in 2023.
Police Spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa stated that the Ministry of Public Security has called for special attention to be given to these cases, urging the Acting IGP to hasten investigations led by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and other agencies, as progress has been deemed insufficient.
He highlighted that a recent review of CID investigations revealed delays in cases such as the Treasury Bond scandal and the Easter Sunday attacks, prompting the ministry to assign additional officers to speed up these probes.
Additionally, DIG Thalduwa mentioned that instructions were given to thoroughly investigate the suspicious death of businessman Dinesh Schaffter in 2022 and the disappearance of former Eastern University Vice Chancellor, Prof. S. Raveendranath, in 2006. The ministry observed inadequate progress in these investigations and has demanded updates.
Further, the police have been instructed to expedite the investigation into the death of a police constable, who was shot by fellow officers from the Weligama Police Station near the “W15” Hotel on December 31, 2023.
The spokesman added that new orders have been issued to launch or expedite investigations into other unsolved cases, including the 2005 abduction and murder of Tamil journalist Taraki Shivaram, and the disappearance of activists Lalith Kumar Weeraraj and Kugan Muruganathan in Jaffna on December 9, 2011.
