Sri Lanka’s health authorities have issued a warning about a possible resurgence of dengue fever due to the ongoing rainy weather, which has created ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes that carry the virus. Officials are urging the public to remain alert and take preventive measures.
Dr. Anoja Dheerasinghe, Consultant Community Physician at the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU), reported that a total of 40,657 dengue cases have been recorded in 2024, with 1,247 new cases in October alone. The NDCU also confirmed 20 dengue-related deaths this year.
“The current weather conditions significantly increase the risk of dengue mosquito breeding,” Dr. Dheerasinghe said, highlighting that the majority of cases have been reported in the Colombo, Gampaha, and Kalutara districts, with other affected regions including Kandy, Ratnapura, Matara, Galle, and Matale.
Health authorities expect the number of cases to rise in the coming weeks if preventive measures are not taken. They are urging the public to eliminate potential mosquito breeding sites, particularly in areas with standing water.
