President Dissanayake Stresses the Importance of Efficient Road Development for Rural Economic Growth

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake emphasized that improving the efficiency of road development projects is essential for achieving rural economic development goals, according to the President’s Media Division (PMD).

He highlighted the need to streamline the procurement process for these projects, ensuring that local communities benefit, rather than concentrating contracts in the hands of a few.

The President made these remarks during a progress review meeting of the Ministry of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation, held today (16) at the Presidential Secretariat, the PMD reported.

The meeting focused extensively on various projects under the ministry, with particular attention to the construction of the Kadawata-Mirigama section of the Central Expressway.

President Dissanayake underscored the critical role of ports, airports, and highways in the country’s economic growth, asserting that careful planning of these projects could significantly boost the national economy.

He also called for consideration of the environmental, financial, and community impacts of ongoing road development projects, urging measures to minimize adverse effects and ensure timely completion.

Additionally, the President instructed officials to prioritize the safety of railway employees and the public in railway line projects.

Secretary to the President Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, Secretary to the Ministry of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation K.D.S. Ruwanchandra, along with officials from affiliated institutions, were also present at the meeting, the PMD added.
