Election Commission Allows Assistance for Disabled Voters, Sets Guidelines for Accompanying Persons

The Election Commission has announced that voters with disabilities may be accompanied by another person to assist them in casting their vote during the upcoming general election. However, individuals under the age of 18 or any candidate in the election are prohibited from accompanying disabled voters.

To receive assistance, disabled voters must first submit a fitness certificate to officials at the polling station. Applications for this certificate can be obtained from the Election Commission office, divisional secretariat, Grama Niladhari offices, or downloaded from www.elections.gov.lk.

Additionally, voters with physical disabilities may apply for transportation assistance to and from the polling station. Applications for this service are available at the same locations, including the commission’s website.

For smoother processing, the Election Commission advises voters to provide a medical certificate from a registered doctor confirming their inability to travel on foot or use public transportation.
