Finance Ministry Refutes Claims of Increased Taxes on Imported Goods, Confirms No Changes to Key Levies

The Ministry of Finance has clarified that recent reports suggesting an increase in taxes on several imported goods are inaccurate. The clarification follows claims that taxes on certain imports were raised from October 14 to December 31, 2024.

According to the Ministry, the special commodity levy, which expired on October 13, 2024, was simply renewed via a new gazette on October 14, with no changes to existing tax rates. The concessionary tax on imported lentils, set at 25 cents, remains unchanged, along with rates for four other key products.

This extension aims to support local industries, such as fishing and fruit cultivation, while also addressing foreign exchange considerations.
