President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has directed Provincial Governors to draft and submit a new proposal aimed at reforming the Provincial Council system.
During a meeting held this morning (22) at the Presidential Secretariat, President Dissanayake emphasized that, during the current government’s transitional period, Provincial Councils must focus on delivering optimal services to improve the living standards of the people.
According to the President’s Media Division (PMD), he urged Governors to actively pursue economic and social initiatives to enhance public welfare. President Dissanayake further stressed the need for establishing a new political culture, reaffirming that the trust placed in him by the public must be fulfilled through effective governance.
He reminded the Governors to avoid previous misuse of state assets and remain committed to providing quality public services. The discussion also addressed vacancies in the health and education sectors under Provincial Councils, with decisions taken to explore viable solutions, the PMD reported.
Additional discussions focused on land issues in the Northern and Eastern provinces, as well as financial matters. President Dissanayake also inquired about land allocations for farmers in Kantale.
Governors who participated in the meeting included Nagalingam Vedanayagam (Northern Province), Champa Janaki Rajaratne (Sabaragamuwa Province), Professor Jayantha Lal Ratnasekera (Eastern Province), Kapila Jayasekera (Uva Province), Bandula Harischandra (Southern Province), Professor Sarath Abeykoon (Central Province), and Wasantha Kumara Wimalasiri (North Central Province).
