The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the designation of the Colombo Port’s Eastern Container Terminal (ECT) project as a “special project.” This decision was made following a proposal by Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation, Vijitha Herath.
At a cabinet meeting held on February 1, 2021, approval was granted to develop the Eastern Container Terminal in phases under the Colombo South Development Project, with full ownership retained by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA). According to Minister Herath, civil construction contracts have already been awarded, and construction is underway.
Additionally, the procurement process for the purchase of cranes has been completed. The Minister also noted that private terminal operators and service providers are benefiting from tax concessions under the Strategic Development Act and Board of Investment Law.
Minister Herath shared these updates during a press conference held today (22).
