The Ministry of Plantations has introduced a mobile coconut sales program aimed at providing consumers with coconuts at affordable prices.
In a statement, the ministry announced that the first phase of the initiative was launched today in several areas across Colombo and its suburbs. Mobile coconut sales vehicles have been deployed in the following locations:
- Near the Welikada Police Station, Colombo
- Kirulapone Market
- Finance Ministry premises
- Near the Welikada Police Station in the Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte Municipal Council area
- Ananda Samarakoon Open Theater, Nugegoda
- Sethsiripaya premises covering the Kaduwela and Battaramulla areas
- Near the Coconut Cultivation Board on Denzil Kobbekaduwa Mawatha
The ministry plans to extend the program to other districts in the coming days.
As part of this initiative, the Coconut Cultivation Board will supply approximately 10,000 coconuts to the market on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Additionally, 5,000 coconuts will be made available on other days, bringing the total to 15,000 coconuts per week to meet local demand.
Moreover, the Kurunegala Plantations Company will contribute 1,500 coconuts daily starting from October 22, while the Chilaw Plantations Company will supply 3,000 coconuts daily starting today.
The Ministry of Plantations expects the retail price of coconuts to range between Rs. 100 and Rs. 120.
