Supreme Court Allows Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe to be Named in Petition Challenging IGP Appointment

The Supreme Court has permitted former President Ranil Wickremesinghe to be named as a respondent in a petition contesting the appointment of Deshabandu Tennakoon as Inspector General of Police (IGP).

The petition, filed by the Young Journalists’ Association, claims that Tennakoon’s appointment is unconstitutional. The case was reviewed by a bench comprising Justices Preethi Padman Surasena and Janak de Silva.

During the hearing, President’s Counsel Saliya Peiris, representing the petitioners, argued that Wickremesinghe, now without presidential immunity, could be included as a respondent. The court accepted this argument and granted permission accordingly.

Previously, the Supreme Court examined this petition alongside seven related cases and, on July 24, issued an interim order preventing Tennakoon from performing duties as IGP until the petitions are resolved.
