Prime Minister Amarasuriya Vows to Hold Former President Wickremesinghe Accountable in 2015 Central Bank Bond Scam

Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, has pledged that former President Ranil Wickremesinghe will be summoned to provide testimony on the 2015 Central Bank bond scandal. Speaking at a National People’s Power (NPP) public meeting, Dr. Amarasuriya confirmed that the NPP-led government is committed to prosecuting all individuals involved in misappropriating public funds.

“Ranil Wickremesinghe has suggested that I lack understanding of the Constitution and even offered to educate me on it. But should I attend his lessons?” Dr. Amarasuriya remarked. “He was rejected by the people 17 times, yet he clings to power. A core principle of the Constitution is the sovereignty of the people—a concept he seems to overlook.”

The Prime Minister went on to criticize Wickremesinghe’s actions, stating, “If he truly understood the Constitution, he would not have delayed elections, disregarded the Constitutional Council’s decisions, threatened its members, or influenced the judiciary to obtain favorable outcomes. He should first grasp these principles before attempting to educate me on constitutional matters. We urge him to focus on his own responsibilities.”

Dr. Amarasuriya concluded, “The people have entrusted us with a mandate, and we are faithfully carrying it out. We need no guidance from those involved in the Central Bank bond scam. Legal action will be taken not only against those implicated in this scandal but also against every individual who has misused public funds.”
