Prime Minister Amarasuriya Calls for Policy-Driven Governance to Overcome Legacy of Arbitrary Decisions

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has underscored the daily challenges the government faces due to arbitrary decisions made by previous ministers, advocating for systematic, policy-driven governance to address these issues.

Speaking at a public meeting in Kotte yesterday, Prime Minister Amarasuriya highlighted the consequences of past governance, where individual ministers operated their sectors with little coordination or foresight. “Every day, we are dealing with the distortions and problems caused by the arbitrary decisions of individual ministers,” she said. “While we agree that public sector salaries need to be increased, this must be done responsibly within the budget framework to prevent further crises.”

She criticized the prior approach, noting that sectors such as education and health were managed as isolated “kingdoms,” each lacking a unified vision for national development. “There was no sense of working together for the country,” she remarked.

Amarasuriya emphasized that the current administration is implementing systematic changes for cohesive decision-making. “Now, during meetings, officials say it is easier to work because we have interconnections, we all speak the same language, and avoid contradictory decisions,” she added.

The Prime Minister urged the public to elect leaders who respect policies and uphold integrity. “We ask that policy-making roles be filled by those who value policies, legal positions by those who respect the law, and financial roles by individuals committed to integrity. This power is in your hands,” she concluded.
