Axiata Group Berhad announced on Friday that Dr. Wijayasuriya would step down from his roles as CEO of Telecommunications Business and Group Executive Director, effective January 15, 2025, to lead Sri Lanka’s digital economy initiatives. He will continue his responsibilities at Axiata in a transitional capacity while advising the Sri Lankan government.
Dr. Wijayasuriya has served Axiata and its predecessor, Telekom Malaysia, for over 30 years, overseeing telecommunications operations across multiple countries, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Cambodia. He is also a former Board member of the GSMA, the global mobile industry’s governing body, and was awarded the prestigious GSMA Chairman’s Award in 2024 for his contributions to the mobile industry worldwide.
