In response to former President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s remarks that the country risks “crashing” like the recent Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) bus accident if experienced leaders are not elected, the National People’s Power (NPP) countered that the so-called “experienced” politicians are the very ones who have mismanaged the country for decades.
Speaking at an election rally in Badulla, NPP member Samantha Vidyaratne asserted that the public would no longer support leaders who contributed to the nation’s economic struggles.
“Ranil said the country needs experienced leaders, comparing it to the KDU bus crash. But let’s not forget—the country has been under the control of these so-called ‘experienced drivers’ for 76 years, and they’ve driven it into bankruptcy and collapse,” Vidyaratne remarked. “People are ready to vote for a truly people-friendly government, and they won’t trust those who led us to this point.”
Wickremesinghe’s comments, made during a forum at the Arcade Independence Square, suggested that electing inexperienced leaders would bring further instability to the country, drawing a comparison to the KDU bus accident that occurred on the Dunhinda-Badulla Road.
