PM Announces Plan to Provide Book Concessions for Schoolchildren Next Year

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has announced that the government will offer concessions to help schoolchildren purchase stationery books starting next year. Speaking at a public meeting in Athurugiriya, she explained that the initiative has received the President’s approval.

Dr. Amarasuriya noted that increased support from the international community has bolstered the country’s efforts, enabling the government to implement several concessions through the President’s intervention.

She highlighted recent measures, including raising pension allowances and increasing financial aid for fishermen. “Beyond these short-term benefits, our upcoming budget will address ways to strengthen social security, protect pensioners, and support the cost of living, particularly in healthcare and education. We must ease the burden on the people,” she emphasized.

The Prime Minister also pointed out that a significant portion of national expenditure is allocated to essential sectors such as food, health, education, and transportation. “Managing these areas will help control costs, and the budget will be crafted with these priorities in mind,” she said.

Dr. Amarasuriya concluded by reaffirming plans to provide relief to schoolchildren when schools reopen in the new year, specifically aiming to reduce the cost of purchasing books. “We are preparing for this,” she added.
