‘Red’ Weather Warning: Low-Pressure System to Intensify, Bringing Extreme Weather to Sri Lanka

The Department of Meteorology has issued a ‘Red’ weather warning as a low-pressure area has developed over the southeast Bay of Bengal. The system is expected to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal on November 25, potentially heading toward Sri Lanka’s northern coast.

Heavy rainfall exceeding 150 mm is anticipated in parts of the Eastern and Uva provinces due to the system’s influence. Additionally, sea areas extending from Mannar to Hambantota via Kankasanthurai, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, and Pottuvil are forecast to experience very rough to high conditions, with wind speeds reaching 60–70 km/h and possible heavy showers or thundershowers.

Naval and fishing communities are advised to avoid venturing into these sea areas starting November 24 until further notice. The general public is urged to remain vigilant for extreme weather conditions expected between November 24 and 26 and to seek assistance from local disaster management authorities as needed.

The Meteorology Department also advises the public to closely monitor future updates and advisories regarding the developing weather situation.
