Low-Pressure Area Forms Over Southeast Bay of Bengal, Expected to Intensify

The Department of Meteorology has announced the formation of a low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal, which is predicted to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal by November 25.

The system is likely to strengthen further and approach the northern coast of Sri Lanka, bringing significant weather impacts to the island.

Weather Forecast

  • Cloud Cover: Cloudy skies are expected over most parts of Sri Lanka due to the influence of the weather system.
  • Rainfall:
    • Showers or thundershowers are forecast in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Central, and Uva provinces, as well as the Hambantota district.
    • Evening or nighttime showers are expected in other parts of the island.
    • Very heavy rainfall exceeding 150 mm is likely in the Eastern and Uva provinces and the Hambantota district.
    • Heavy showers above 100 mm are expected in some areas of the North-Central province.
  • Wind Conditions: Fairly strong winds of 30–40 km/h are anticipated in the Northern, North-Central, and Eastern provinces, and the Hambantota district.

The public is advised to take necessary precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
